A Remarkable Treatment For A 91-Year-Old Woman With A Femoral Fracture

Breaking the femur, the longest and strongest bone in the human body, is no easy feat. It usually takes a high impact force or severe osteoporosis to cause such an injury. Unfortunately, for Mrs. Nguyen Thi H, a 91-year-old woman from Can Tho, Vietnam, she experienced both. She fell on a hard floor and fractured her right femur near the hip joint, a type of fracture known as Intertrochanteric.

Luckily, she was brought to Nam Can Tho University Medical Center, the newly invested medical facility in the Mekong Delta region, where she received prompt and professional care from Dr. Duong Minh Tan and his team of orthopedic surgeons.

A challenging surgery

Mrs. H underwent X-ray and CT scan 3D reconstruction to assess the extent of the damage. The results showed that her fracture was closed, meaning that the bone did not pierce the skin, but it was displaced, meaning that the bone fragments were not aligned.

Dr. Duong Minh Tan decided to perform a surgery to fix the fracture with a locking plate and screws, a technique that allows for stable fixation and early mobilization. The surgery was done under fluoroscopy, a type of X-ray imaging that shows real-time images of the bones during the operation.

The surgery lasted about an hour and was successful. Dr. Duong Minh Tan was able to align the bone fragments and secure them with a locking plate and screws.

A speedy recovery

Mrs. H recovered well after the surgery and was able to move her leg soon after. She stayed in the Medical Center for seven days, during which she received multidisciplinary care for her other health conditions. She also received physiotherapy and follow-up visits to monitor her healing process.

Dr. Duong Minh Tan stated, “Mrs. H is one of our oldest patients who underwent this type of surgery. She is a remarkable example of how surgical fixation of intertrochanteric femoral fractures can improve the quality of life and reduce the risk of complications for older adults.”

A word of advice

Dr. Duong Minh Tan also shared some tips on how to prevent femoral fractures, especially for older adults who are more prone to osteoporosis and falls.

He advised that older adults, especially women, should:

  • Get regular check-ups and screenings for osteoporosis and bone density.
  • Take calcium and vitamin D supplements as prescribed by their doctors.
  • Do weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, or dancing to strengthen their bones.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Be careful when moving around, especially in slippery or dark areas.
  • Use assistive devices such as canes, walkers, or handrails if needed.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good traction.
  • Install grab bars and non-slip mats in bathrooms.
  • Remove clutter and tripping hazards from floors.
