Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: What You Need to Know A common condition that affects the hand and wrist

Duc T. Nguyen

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition that occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm to the palm of the hand, is compressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve controls sensations and movements in the thumb and most of the fingers. When it is compressed, it can cause symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand and wrist.

CTS can affect anyone, but it is more common in middle-aged women (premenopausal period). Some possible causes of CTS are joint deformities, wrist injuries, repetitive hand motions, pregnancy and certain health conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid disorders.

If left untreated, CTS can worsen over time and lead to permanent nerve damage and loss of hand function. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as you notice any signs of CTS.

Nam Can Tho University Medical Center recently received and treated a patient with CTS. The patient was V.T.H.Y (1978), who was admitted due to prolonged pain and numbness in the first three fingers of the right hand.

The diagnosis showed that the patient had CTS on the right side. After consultation, Dr. Dương Minh Tân recommended surgical correction by cutting the carpal ligament to release the compressed median nerve. This procedure helps to restore normal movement of the nerve without obstruction and eliminate all symptoms of CTS.

The surgery was performed successfully and the patient recovered well. The patient expressed satisfaction with the treatment and thanked the medical staff for their professionalism and care.

How To Prevent And Manage CTS

The best way to prevent CTS is to avoid activities that put excessive pressure on the median nerve at the wrist. Some tips to prevent and manage CTS are:

  • Take frequent breaks from repetitive hand tasks such as typing, sewing or playing musical instruments.
  • Stretch and flex your fingers, wrists and arms regularly throughout the day.
  • Use ergonomic tools and devices that reduce strain on your wrists such as keyboards, mice and chairs.
  • Wear a wrist splint at night to keep your wrist in a neutral position and relieve pressure on the nerve.
  • Apply ice or heat to your wrist to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen to ease discomfort.
  • Consult your doctor if you have any medical conditions that may increase your risk of developing CTS such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or thyroid disorders.

If you have any symptoms of CTS, do not ignore them or hope they will go away on their own. Early diagnosis and treatment can help you avoid serious complications and improve your quality of life.
