How a subcutaneous injection

port helps cancer patients

Duc T. Nguyen

Cancer patients who receive chemotherapy for a long time often face problems with their blood vessels, such as sclerosis, rupture, or necrosis. This can make it difficult and painful for them to receive drugs, blood, or nutrients through intravenous infusion. In this report, we will share with you how a subcutaneous injection port can solve this problem and improve the quality of life for cancer patients at Nam Can Tho University Medical Center.

What is a subcutaneous injection port?

A Subcutaneous Injection Port is a small device that is implanted under the skin, usually on the chest or upper arm. It consists of a reservoir that can hold fluids and a catheter that connects the reservoir to a large vein near the heart.

The injection port allows doctors and nurses to easily access the patient’s bloodstream without having to puncture their veins repeatedly. They can use a special needle to inject or withdraw fluids through the port. The injection port can be used for:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Blood transfusion
  • Nutritional support
  • Blood sampling

The injection port can be left in place for months or even years, depending on the patient’s condition and treatment plan. It requires minimal maintenance and care, such as keeping it clean and flushing it regularly.

A successful case of subcutaneous injection port placement

Recently, Nam Can Tho University Medical Center received and treated patient Ho Chien T (71 years old, Chau Thanh, Hau Giang) who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. He required chemotherapy and other supportive treatments.

However, his peripheral veins were too small and deformed due to repeated injections and blood tests. He also had other health issues, such as exhaustion, pulmonary hypertension, heart valve failure, and hypertension.

The doctors at the Department of Oncology decided to place a subcutaneous injection port for him to facilitate his treatment. The surgery was performed by Dr. Ngo Nhat Linh - Head of Oncology Department - and his team.

The surgery was successful and the patient was able to receive chemotherapy and other fluids through the injection port. He no longer had to endure the pain and discomfort of multiple needle sticks. His condition improved after one cycle of chemotherapy and his lymph nodes decreased in size.

The advantages of subcutaneous injection port placement

According to Dr. Ngo Nhat Linh, subcutaneous injection port placement is a technique that is widely applied to cancer patients who need long-term intravenous infusion. It has many advantages over conventional methods, for example:

  • Reducing the risk of infection, inflammation, or thrombosis in the veins.
  • Improving the comfort and convenience for the patients and the medical staff.
  • Enhancing the effectiveness and safety of drug delivery.
  • Preserving the cosmetic appearance of the patients.

At Nam Can Tho University Medical Center, subcutaneous injection port placement technique has been applied for a long time by experienced and skilled surgeons. The Medical Center has modern equipment and facilities to ensure the best outcomes for the patients.
