Nam Can Tho University Hospital: Successfully surgery a large spinal cord tumor

Nam Can Tho University Hospital cooperated with Hue Central Hospital to perform spinal tumor removal surgery on Nguyen Van D., a 46-year-old patient from Bac Lieu Province. The patient had a tumor outside the thoracic spine in the spinal canal.

According to the patient's family, in January 2024, Mr. D. began experiencing numbness in his hips and both feet. Despite seeking treatment and trying various measures, his condition did not improve and the numbness worsened. Approximately 10 days before being admitted to the hospital, Mr. D. began to experience weakness in his lower limbs. By the time of his admission, he had lost the ability to walk and was having difficulty urinating.

Doctors checked X-ray films before performing surgery

After being admitted to Nam Can Tho University Hospital, the patient underwent a thorough examination and paraclinical tests by doctors. Based on the results of a magnetic resonance imaging, a consultation was held between doctors at Nam Can Tho University Hospital and Hue Central Hospital. The patient was diagnosed with a tumor located outside the thoracic spine in the spinal canal. It was agreed that surgery would be necessary to remove the tumor and alleviate pressure on the root canal.

Prior to performing surgery on patient D, doctors at Nam Can Tho University Hospital and experts at Hue Central Hospital held a consultation

On March 30, patient D underwent surgery performed by M.D. Ngo Van Quang Anh, Deputy Department of Neurosurgery at Hue Central Hospital, along with doctors from the Department of General Surgery, Department of Surgery, Anesthesia, and Resuscitation at Nam Can Tho University Hospital. The surgery lasted for more than 3 hours and successfully removed the entire tumor while ensuring the safety of the spinal cord structure and nerve roots for patient D. On the sixth day after the surgery, the patient's vital signs remained stable and he was advised to do rehabilitation exercises to improve movement in his lower limbs.

Doctors performed surgery on patients

Doctors misdiagnosed the patient as having a lumbar disc herniation. The patient received medical treatment at different hospitals, but did not improve. However, when he arrived at Nam Can Tho University Hospital, the patient was accurately diagnosed and received timely surgery.

The success of this surgery is the result of tight coordination between doctors at Nam Can Tho University Hospital and experts at Hue Central Hospital. This is also a testament to the development of Nam Can Tho University Hospital, which has greatly improved the quality of medical care for both local residents and those from outside the Mekong Delta region.

Doctors visited the patient after the surgery

Experts recommend that patients seek treatment at a reputable and high-quality medical facility when experiencing severe or persistent symptoms. This ensures timely and effective treatment in a hospital or clinic setting.
