Performing Lung Tumor Biopsy with Core Needle A minimally invasive and accurate method to diagnose lung diseases

Duc T. Nguyen

Lung tumor biopsy with core needle is a method of using a core needle to take samples from the lung tumor under the guidance of computed tomography (CT). The sample is taken out of the body and sent to pathology specialists to diagnose whether the patient has malignant or benign disease.

Lung tumor biopsy is a minimally invasive and accurate method to diagnose abnormal tumors in the lungs. It can help to diagnose lung diseases such as lung cancer, lung metastasis from other organs, pulmonary tuberculosis, pulmonary fungus and nonspecific pneumonia.

This method is performed by oncology and imaging specialists who have experience and expertise in this field. It has many advantages over other methods such as bronchoscopy or surgery, such as less pain, faster recovery, no scars and no risk of collapsing the lungs.

Nam Can Tho University Medical Center has recently performed this method successfully for a patient with suspected lung cancer.

The case of patient Tran Ba K

Nam Can Tho University Medical Center received a male patient named Tran Ba K (76 years old) living in Kien Giang province because of persistent dry cough and accidentally detected lung tumors on both sides after chest X-ray to evaluate preparation for endoscopic prostatectomy.

The patient underwent chest CT and recorded peripheral upper left lung lobe with a large tumor about 6cm, upper right lung lobe with a large tumor about 2cm suspected of malignancy.

Oncology specialists and imaging specialists assessed suspected lung cancer and decided to perform lung tumor biopsy with core needle under CT localization. They chose the left lung tumor as the target for biopsy because it was larger and more accessible.

The procedure was done under local anesthesia and pre-anesthesia. The core needle was inserted through the chest wall and into the tumor under CT guidance. The needle was rotated to cut out a small piece of tissue from the tumor. The tissue sample was then removed from the needle and placed in a container with preservative solution. The needle was withdrawn and pressure was applied to the puncture site to stop bleeding.

The whole procedure took about 15 minutes and the patient did not feel any pain or discomfort. The patient was then transferred to the recovery room for observation. There was no sign of bleeding, infection or pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity).

The tissue sample was sent to the pathology department for analysis. After 7 days of biopsy, the pathological result of patient Tran Ba K was: Lung cancer (Moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the lung).

The benefits and recommendations of lung tumor biopsy with core needle

Lung tumor biopsy with core needle is a safe and effective method to diagnose lung diseases that cause abnormal tumors in the lungs. It can provide accurate results that can help doctors plan the best treatment options for patients.

Dr. Ngo Nhat Linh, oncology specialist said:

“With the technique of lung tumor biopsy with core needle under CT guidance, we can diagnose whether or not lung cancer, less pain, faster recovery and no scars. Patients do not have to undergo complicated biopsy surgery that requires anesthesia and collapses the lungs if bronchoscopy cannot reach the lung tumor.”

He also advised that if you have any symptoms such as persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, bloody sputum or weight loss, you should go to the nearest medical facility for examination and timely treatment. Early detection and treatment can improve your prognosis and quality of life.
